Okanagan Zone Speed Camp
Hosted by Vernon Ski Club at SilverStar Mountain Resort

The Big White Ski Club was at the top of the podium in the SPEED CAMP at SilverStar Mountain Resort on Jan 31, Feb 1 & 2. The Vernon Ski Club hosted 148 total competitors in the U12, U14 & U16 categories. The ski clubs in attendance were from:

• Apex Ski Club
• Big White Ski Club
• Lightning Creek Ski Club (Quesnel)
• Grouse Mountain
• Gkhat Ski Club (Kicking Horse)
• Revelstoke Ski Club
• Vernon Ski Club
• Yukon Alpine Club

This camp was one of the only chances for kids this age to strap on their longest, fastest skis, pull on their speed suits and get into their most aerodynamic tucks!  THEY WENT FAST!!!!  Each athlete had the opportunity to do multiple runs on the downhill (DH) course between Friday and Saturday with the official race on the Sunday. The top speed reached was an incredible 105 kms/hr!

Podium finishes had Erika Hveding (2008) hitting the gold position at the top of the podium in the u12 Ladies category, while Keir Phillips (2008) landed in the bronze position for u12 Men. Liv Willoughby (2006) took home silver in the u14 Ladies, with David Brundula (2006) also at the top of the podium with gold for u14 Men. In the u16 category, Finley Cashin (2005) not only had the fastest run of the day, but also ended up holding his reign from 2019 in the gold spot. Shayna Little (2005) had the fasted single run for the ladies but had an unfortunate DNF which made her ineligible for the two-run combined awards.

BWSC’s Vice President Diana Veitch stated, “Many of the returning athletes claim this event as one of their season’s favorites, while the kids who attended for their first time are already looking forward to next year’s event!”
