Teck Open U16 Provincials

February 3 to 6, 2022 SilverStar Mountain and the Vernon Ski Club hosted the Teck Open U16 Provincials race. The U16’s from the Big White Ski Club (BWSC) provided another impressive performance! The weekend featured race training on Wednesday followed by Giant Slalom (GS) races on Thursday and Friday and then Slalom
(SL) races on Saturday and Sunday.

The U16 competition started on Thursday with 2-run GS races. Liv Willoughby continued her leadership position on the squad by posting an 8th place finish! Liv’s third Top 10 Finish out of 3 races! The results for the rest of the U16 Women: Tabitha Taylor 26, Kael Oberlander 37, Skyla Campbell 43, and Sofia Blondin 70. For the U16 Men: Callum Sutton-Macmillan finished in 36th place followed by Samuel Finch with a 50th. David Brundula and Sacha Jirasek DNF.

Friday, Day 2 was another 2-run GS competition. Sacha J. led the way in men's with an impressive 11th place finish; just 9/100ths from reaching the Top 10! David B. bounced back to earn 25th. Callum S. 44th, Samuel F. 51st. Tabitha T. in 14th and Liv W. in18th showed the U16 Women were still up to the challenge on Day 2. Skyla C. placed 38th and Sofia B. a 65th, Kael O. DNF.

The U16 Women brought in some fresh recruits on Saturday for the first day of Slalom racing. Serena Richards placed 29th, Gaby Tymchuk placed 40th and Sofia B. placed 55th. The rest of the U16 Women were part of a bewildering group of 33 out of 88 other female competitors that did not finish the race. Callum S. achieved 21st place and Samuel F. 40th place. The rest of the U16 Men were part of a staggering 20 out of 60 male competitors that did not finish the race.

On Sunday, Sacha J. posted another 11th place, this time just 31/100ths out of the tenth spot in mens! David B. 16th, Callum S. 26th, and Samuel F. 42th. Gaby T. placed 38th and Sofia B. placed 59th in the women's group. The deteriorating course conditions may have contributed to the rest of the U16 Women joining 29 of 88 competitors that were either disqualified (DSQ) or did not finish (DNF).

“These young athletes train year-round. They didn’t get to race at all in 2021, so it’s fantastic to watch them get back to racing this year! What they do on skis and the speeds reached speaks to the elite-level of competition they have achieved.” Scott Campbell, BWSC Parent Liaison.
