Big White Ski Club Hosts U8-U12 Zone Final

Nancy Greene Ski League OK Zone Finals

On the weekend of 5-6 March, Big White Ski Club (BWSC) hosted the Nancy Greene Ski League, Okanagan Zone Finals. Over 250 U8, U10, and U12 racers took part, representing Apex Ski Club, Vernon Ski Club (Silverstar), Sun Peaks Alpine Club, Revelstoke Ski Club, and Big White Ski Club.

The return to hosting a large-scale race was a welcome one for BWSC. A huge thanks to the volunteers who make a race like this happen. So many parents helped out, learning new skills and remembering old ones. As a bonus, it really helps to build camaraderie among athletes and parents.

Nancy Greene Ski League is the grassroots program for Alpine Canada, with a goal of making entry-level ski racing fun while developing skills and a passion for skiing. As such, results aren’t a focus, and boys and girls compete against each other up to U10.

The U6 and U8 athletes raced Saturday, with U10 and U12 racing Sunday. The format for both days was parallel slalom, which meant for lots of excitement. For many of the racers, this was their first race ever, so the ideal conditions of sun and fast snow made it easy for them to love ski racing.

Big White U8 and U10 athletes had some great runs and showed great character by pushing themselves and their teammates. Big White Ski Resort’s mascot, Loose Moose, even made an appearance Saturday to congratulate the racers.

Big White U12 athletes enjoyed some impressive results. The overall U12 winner (ladies and men) was Alexandra Walker.
