BWSC News

From March 21–23, 2025, Big White Ski Club proudly hosted the Teck Provincial Ski Cross Championships at the Telus Park Snow Cross track. The event welcomed 130 athletes from across the province, ranging from U12 to U19 categories.

Friday kicked off with a full day of training, giving athletes the opportunity to get comfortable with the course ahead of a big weekend of racing.  Saturday delivered a great day of racing.

The U12 category ran a 3-round points race format, with the top 8 athletes advancing to the semifinals. The U14 and older athletes competed in a more traditional Ski Cross ladder which included LCQs (last chance qualifiers) to ensure all athletes had at least two runs.   In the U12 Women’s Big Final, Revelstoke’s Indie Carson took the win, followed by Maddison Kreuger (Vernon Ski Club) in second. Big White Ski Club’s own Marlowe Dessaulles and Amelia Thomas placed third and fourth respectively.

The U12 Men’s Big Final saw Big White athletes dominate the podium, with Isaac Ramsay claiming first place. Cole Trent (Whistler) finished second, with Big White teammates Niko Yamamoto and Sebastian Weber taking third and fourth.

In the U14 Women’s race, Soneva Lott (Sun Peaks) took the top spot. Olivia Cook (Whistler) finished second, with Big White’s Marin Oberlander in third and Evelyn Duffy (Grouse) in fourth.

The U14 Men’s category was won by Corvin Lott (Sun Peaks). Parker Johnson (Grouse) came in second, Brodie Trent (Whistler) took third, and Mateo Colvin (Revelstoke) rounded out the top four.

Big White athletes led the way in the U16 Women’s category, with Mikalah Taylor taking first and Alexandra Walker finishing second. Grace Allaway (Yukon) took third place.

For the U16 Men, Trayle Porter (Sun Peaks) claimed the win, followed by Eames Kim (Grouse Tyee) in second, Alberto Booker (Lake Louise) in third, and Ziggy Suchy (Whistler) in fourth.

In the U19 Women’s race, Kael Oberlander (Okanagan Ski Team athlete and Big White Ski Club alumni) finished first. Ellyann Dinn and Annie McNeill, both representing Yukon, took second and third.

For the U19 Men, top results went to Harrison Duess (Whistler), Wyatt Kindred (Skykomish), and Matthew Nann (Mt. Seymour).

Saturday evening wrapped up with a banquet for athletes, coaches, and families at Happy Valley Lodge.

Sunday brought a major weather shift, with heavy snowfall beginning early in the morning. Despite significant effort from the race crew to clear the course, the snow continued to fall so quickly that conditions became unsafe to continue racing. While disappointing, athletes, coaches, and families made the best of it and enjoyed a classic Big White powder day.

Despite Sunday’s cancellation, the weekend was a big success. Thank you to all the volunteers, coaches, and Big White Telus Park staff for making the event possible and delivering a memorable experience for everyone involved.

This past weekend, the Big White Ski Club hosted the Nancy Greene Ski League Okanagan Zone Finals at Big White Ski Resort, welcoming racers from Sun Peaks, Apex, and Vernon.

Saturday, March 1, saw the U8 racers take on the dual glalom course under perfect conditions smiling faces and sunny skies.  Lucy moose (the Big White mascot) even came out to cheer on the kids.  Each racer completed two runs, showcasing their skills and enthusiasm for the sport.

On Sunday, the U10 and U12 racers hit the course under equally stunning weather, with sunshine and above-zero temperatures for spring like conditions. A speed trap added an extra thrill to the day, and all participants, coaches, and families enjoyed a BBQ lunch. Thank you to Gorman Bros. Lumber for sponsoring the BBQ.

This event was also an important training opportunity for our Race Organizing Committee, which featured many new volunteers stepping into key roles. Their hard work, along with the dedication of coaches, parents, and officials, made the event a success.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated, supported, and helped make the Okanagan Zone Finals a fantastic experience for all!

The past three weeks have been filled with excitement and exceptional performances for the athletes of the Big White Ski Club. Competing in three major events—the Apex Teck Okanagan Zone Race (Jan 11-12), the Apex Teck Open (Jan 16-19), and the Speed Camp at SilverStar Mountain Resort (Jan 24-26)—our skiers demonstrated skill, determination, and sportsmanship on the slopes.

Our U16 team competed in all three events, while the U12 and U14 teams attended two of them. These events showcased the dedication of our athletes and the hard work of their coaches and families. There were many standout performances to start the season:

  • Hunter Kay (U16): Podium finishes in all three weekends, including multiple first-place finishes.
  • Marin Oberlander (U14): A perfect record, claiming the top spot in every event she has competed in.
  • Isaac Ramsay (U12): Three first-place finishes at the first race and a third-place finish at Speed Camp.
  • Alexandra Walker (U16) and Mikalah Taylor (U16): Multiple podiums each.
  • Niko Yamamoto (U12): Achieved his first podium finish of the season, coming second at speed camp.

The club is incredibly proud of all our athletes results and looks forward to more success as the season continues. A big thank you to Apex Ski Club and Vernon Ski Club for hosting these extraordinary events.
